RANDOM SAUCE #5
Thank you all SO much for your sweet words of encouragement and prayers. I was having *a moment* the other day, and just spilled my guts here on the blog. I sometimes feel like I only should tell the good stuff on the blog; you know, everything is always sunshine and roses. But not so much for the last six weeks over here. I must say that I felt a lot better after my little rant, and I so appreciate everyone's kind words! :) You will be happy to know that the hubs was released from the hospital on Sunday (probably because he begged the doctors to let him out for Sly's surgery), and we are praying he his home for good! There are a few spots that showed up on his leg yesterday, so we're a little cautious. He has another appointment tomorrow. Sly's surgery went well, so well in fact, he was running around and screaming like a wild man yesterday afternoon. I was kind of hoping he would be mellow for the rest of the day from the drugs, but no. Not my boy!

RANDOM SAUCE #6
I wanted to write a note of thanks back to everyone who left me words of encouragement the other day, but bad news... About 2/3 of them were "no reply bloggers." This goes for people who are bloggers as well as bloggy readers! I get an email every time someone comments on my blog, and I like to hit the reply button and write back. That way, I know you've seen my message (instead of commenting on my blog and hoping you've seen it). But I can't do that if you're a no reply blogger :( Here are a few tutorials you can check out to fix that problem: Ideas by Jivey or The Tattooed Teacher. I've had many ups and downs being a no-reply blogger myself, but now that it's fixed, I love that I am able chat with my friends :)

OK, so I think that's all the randomness I have for tonight! Later gators!!

HAPPY BLOGIVERSARY TO ME!

One year ago, on a whim, I started a blog. I had ZERO idea what I was doing. Honestly, I didn't read many teacher blogs, so I really had no clue. But I was inspired to do it by the technology integrator at our school, who showed us Google Reader (sniff sniff... I don't want to talk about it...), and that opened up a new window to my small town Wisconsin world.

I have learned SO much since then. I can't even begin to explain and describe how much this experience has taught me and changed me, for the better of course, and I can only hope that I have returned the favor to those of you who follow this blog. Whether it's been for a week, a month, or even a whole year; I don't know if I can give back as much as you've all given me, but I will sure try!
OK, enough of the sappy nonsense. LET'S CELEBRATE!!

I wanted to do something where everyone can win! You guys, I am super excited about this! This is so brand, spankin' new that it's not even posted to TPT yet! I hope I'll be able to get to it by the end of the weekend... YAY IT'S POSTED NOW! Click on the images below to take you to my TPT shop!

Introducing...

You've seen these two guys before...

But these two are hot off the presses!

I figured since I already had half the year done, I should probably do the other half! :)

Thanks for coming along on this wild and crazy adventure with me! I can't wait to see what the next year holds for this li'l ol' blog :)

Extreme Blog Makeover + Nonfictions Genres (and Quick Giveaway!) + Another Giveaway

Woah that is a long blog post title!

So I've been wanting to update the look of my blog for a while, and I finally did it last night! I created the old design when I first started this blog, and now that I semi- know what I'm doing, I wanted to spice it up a bit! I made a new header and button, added quick links on the side to my TPT store and Pinterest, and added a "Shout Outs"spot. Even though the hippo and fonts were free, the creators still deserve the recognition :) I also added a little ditty about my hippo obsession in the "About Me" tab on top. The only thing that I'm not crazy on is the grassy background. It doesn't really match the green in my header and button, and I'm kind of a perfectionist. I was going to create a background, but I couldn't figure out how to upload it into Blogger. If you know how, help a girl out!

So of course, after I updated, I happened upon this cute hippo...
Isn't she FAB?! Now I'm torn if I should use her instead of my current hippo. Thoughts? Sidenote: I found her on the website www.mycutegraphics.com. I don't know if I've just been living under a rock, or what, but this site is new to me and is AWESOME! Free clip art for teachers! WOO!!!

Moving on... Last week in reading we've been focusing on the nonfiction genres. I've added to my list of genres covered (thanks CCSS!): informational, biography, and autobiography (the classics), and now the list includes: memoir, manual, recipe, and advertisement. I had a heck of a time trying to define the genres in kid language, especially the difference between an autobiography and memoir (no, they're not the same!). In the process of researching for definitions and books to go with each, I made posters for each genre so I wouldn't forget!
This set is available in my TPT store, but tonight's your lucky night because I'm feeling all Christmas-y and want to give TWO away! All you have to do is leave me a comment with your email address and the Christmas song you like the least. I'm listening to Christmas music as I write this, and I want to know if I'm the only one who thinks "The Little Drummer Boy" is dumb. "Pa rum pa rum pum." Really??? Who says that? Leave your comment by 10:00PM central time on Monday December 10th and I'll randomly choose TWO winners!

Oh, and I'm participating in this giveaway:

Go check it out!

CLEARLY this post highlights my self-diagnosed ADD... LOOK, SQUIRREL!! Thanks for hanging with me until the end!

Gotta get ready for the game tonight! GO PACK GO!!!

I Have Who Has? Telling Time: Differentiated!

So if you haven't figured it out, I'm a little a lotta obsessed with "I Have, Who Has?" games. I just LOVE how the game is quick and easy, educational, and FUN! So I was perusing TPT the other day, checking out my options, and I wanted to download a telling time version, except... everything that was out there was all hour, all half-hour, all 5 minutes, etc... I don't know about your class, but I have a wide range of abilities in mine, and there is NO WAY I can keep EVERYONE engaged when all of the cards are the same.

One of my teaching mantras is "Differentiation is the name of my game." Why can't there be an "I Have, Who Has?" with differentiated cards? Some cards are on the easy side, some are average, and some are more challenging for the smarties. Sounds like a good idea, hey? So I did it!
(Click on the pic to go to my TPT store)

I am seriously SO excited about this! I color coded the cards based on their level of difficulty:
Red cards: times to the hour
Orange cards: times to the half-hour
Green cards: times to the quarter-hour
Blue cards: times to 5 minutes
Purple cards: times to 5 minutes also, but they are more difficult due to the placement of the hour hand ( ex. 10:55, 6:50)

Now, everyone can play the same game, no matter what their ability, AND no one has to know that the cards have varying degrees of difficulty! WOO!!!

Student Goal Setting + GIVEAWAY!!

Most of my bulletin boards aren't quite done yet... I put up anchor charts and other visuals that my students and I create together, so they're still a work-in-progress. One of my whiteboards is 2/3 CAFE menu and 1/3 was empty. I wasn't sure what to do with the empty space. Until now.

My school does components of Responsive Classroom (The Morning Meeting Book and The First Six Weeks of School), and one of the activities in The First Six Weeks of School is to have the kids write down their hopes and dreams for the school year. I've always done it, but I never liked how they were called "hopes and dreams." For my friends who grew up in the late 80s/early 90s like me, the words "hopes and dreams" always make me think of that episode of Saved by the Bell where they were playing basketball and Mr. Belding yells, "Shoot your hopes and dreams!" and they lose the game! LOL!

I always state, write on the board, and interact with the goal(s) of my lesson, so I knew the term "goal" would be familiar to my students. Let's call them goals instead, shall we? When I think about goals, I think about hockey. Have I mentioned that I am an ice hockey player? Well I am. So I made a giant hockey net and used pre-cut letters to spell the word "GOOOAL" on top. We read a super cute book called Paulie Pastrami Achieves World Peace (thanks Megan and Carmen for the hook up!), and then talked about how Paulie set a goal and worked to achieve it. He was a hockey player in the book too, so that was a great segue into the next activity. We brainstormed a list of learning goals and behavior/friendship goals for second grade. Each student got two hockey pucks, and they needed to set one learning goal and one behavior/friendship goal. If I had more space, I probably would have separated the behavior/friendship goal. Here's how it turned out!
I am seriously LOVING this!! I wish I could have somehow made a net in the background... if you have any suggestions, leave me a comment! If you're not a crazy hockey fan like me, you could do soccer instead? My teammates did the same activity but used cupcakes (also in the book). Then they watched the Will.I.Am Sesame Street song and said it was a great way to conclude the lesson. I didn't have time today, but I think I'm going to show it tomorrow.

Tomorrow's Friday! YAY!! I am so exhausted!!
